One local youth will be heading to University earlier than expected as part of a transformational month-long summer experience. For the month of July Red Lake District High School student Addison Okell will be spending time on campus at the University of Calgary learning about innovation and entrepreneurship.
“I think it is going to be nice to meet lots of people and I expect it will be filled with new experiences,” said the Grade 10 student last week while discussing his selection in the SHAD program. “I had to write a couple essays on the events when we felt like we were leaders, significant awards that we have won in the last three years, a creative essay and another essay. In total I think there were five essays.”
Okell was chosen as one of 700 youth who will attend the coveted program which focusses on science, technology, engineering, arts and math. While on campus students participate in immersive lectures, workshops, projects and activities. Speakers include professors, business leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators. Engineering and design challenges are also given to teams to complete business and marketing plans, and design and build working prototypes. Winning projects advance to national judging in the fall.
Okell says he is looking forward to the summer experience noting “I think the biggest part will be interacting with other people and looking to see what university is like because we will be staying in residence.”
