Saturday, July 19 marked the 4th annual Rock the Runway event held at the Red Lake Airport.
Attendees were treated to an aviation memorabilia exhibit, a collection of classic cars, and eight aircraft displays, including a Canadian Armed Forces Bell 412CF, a CL-415 Water Bomber, and, of course, the classic Norseman. Kids enjoyed playing on the new teeter-totter and going for a spin on the “Norseman Express.” The whole area lit up at night with an all ages live music event.
A flight demonstration by the Canadian Forces Harvard II high performance military aircraft, a Fire Fit demonstration by local volunteer firefighters, and food provided by Christ Lutheran Church were also on the afternoon agenda.
But one of the highlights by far was the Harv Air Pitts Special rides that took participants on aerobatic flights to see the lakes and trees of the area from a whole new perspective.
Seven locals were brave enough to partake in the rides, including local Aaron Leblanc who, upon exiting the tiny plane, said it was a complete thrill.
“He is really an up and coming character in Manitoba music. He was excellent to listen to,” said airport manager and event organizer Duane Riddell.
Despite the roller-coaster weather, including heavy wind gusts and chilly rain, Riddell estimated the attendance to be on par with past years, around 400 people.
