It was a flawless season for the Red Lake Rams Sr. boys basketball team as they went undefeated into the NorWOSSA finals hosted by Red Lake District High School (RLDHS) on Feb. 11 and 12. The championship game proved no different and the boys cruised to victory against the Queen Elizabeth Warriors of Sioux Lookout.
The stands were packed and the crowd was rowdy with both Rams and Warriors fans cheering on their teams with enthusiasm. Even the Rams mascot Renaldo the Ram made an appearance, hoisting pom-poms to pep up local fans.
The team got off to a quick start and, tallying up points against the Warriors, and ended the first quarter having doubled the rival’s points with a score of 16-8. The boys kept up this pace as they cruised into the second quarter dominating the play throughout and finishing off at halftime with a score of 30-19.
Key strengths of the team included their ability to take advantage of the opposing team’s fouls and sink the majority of their foul shots, along with a strong defensive nabbing most of the rebounds. These qualities paid off as the boys continued the tempo into a high scoring third quarter finishing with a total of 49-24.
A strong offensive with precision shooters also played a role in helping the Rams outshoot the Warriors and eventually cap off the game with a final score of 54-35.
Leading point scorers of the game included: Matt Krummenacher with 15 points, Josh Baranesky with 14 points and Andy Husack with 11 points.
Now that the boys have placed first in NorWOSSA, Red Lake will be hosting a best two out of three playoff vs Manitouwadge High School on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. If necessary, there will be a third game on Friday, Feb. 21 at 9 a.m. If the Rams defeat Manitouwadge, they will qualify for OFSAA which is hosted in Timmins from March 3-5.
