Prep work or “grubbing” starts last week on the 3.5 acre piece of municipal land between the Red Lake Super 8 and Tim Hortons. This step in the preparation process will bring the land up to rough grade, at which point it will be ready for the cut and fill process, leveling, and gravel fill. The current work was made possible with a 2013 FedNor grant of over $209,000 and is expected to be complete by fall, 2014.
Red Lake Economic Development Officer Bill Greenway says there has been a lot of commercial interest in the land, particularly from Dairy Queen, which is currently seeking potential franchisees to open a DQ Grill & Chill.
