It has been a decade since the Indigenous Youth Alliance made Tiffany Eckley’s vision of a Red Lake Pow Wow into a reality. For 2013, as in years past, the anniversary event will be held in her honour.

The annual Red Lake Pow Wow is slated to begin at the Dan Kucheran Memorial Ball Field on June 14 with Brown Eagle Singers and will be co-hosted by Poplar Hill Drum Group say organizers.

“Kicking off this year’s 10th Anniversary Pow Wow will be a special show on Thursday June 13th at 7:00 p.m. featuring Sagkeeng’s Finest (Winners of Canada’s Got Talent) and The Asham Stompers,” announced Carol Johnston last week. “Grand Entry will be Friday June 14th at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday June 15th at Noon. There will be an open Community pot luck feast following the closing ceremonies on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.”

Fundraising has become a major component of the event each year and Johnston says the prizes for this year’s raffles are designed to make the Pow Wow “bigger and better”.

“The first is for 3 draws: 1st Prize is a Canoe, 2nd Prize a Chainsaw and 3rd Prize a $250.00 Gas Voucher for Mike Litwin Fuels, tickets are $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00 and we will be doing the draw at the Legion on Friday May 31, 2013 after the Meat Draws. The second raffle is for a 2013 HD 16 Alum Boat with 20 H.P. Yamaha Motor and trailer $20.00 a ticket and draw date is June 15th at the Powwow during the feast,” she adds.

Organizers also note they are looking for more food vendors to join Kokom’s Bannock Shack which will be coming up from Vermillion Bay and arts and craft work.

Johnston says space is limited so those interested are urged to contact Donna Williams to register or leave a message for her at 727-3562. For more information look up the Red Lake Community Powwow Facebook page.
