Local mine rescue technician Dave Hay will represent the Red Lake District at the 68th annual Ontario Mine Rescue Provincial Competition next month.

The rescuer, who is a member of Red Lake Gold Mines Team 2, won the award for top technician during the 2017 Red Lake District Mine Rescue Competition in Cochenour, May 11 to 12. The competition included team and individual events.

During the two-day event four mine rescue teams from Goldcorp Musselwhite Mine and Goldcorp Red Lake Gold Mines were evaluated on their firefighting skills, first aid response, use of emergency equipment and decision-making ability under stress in a simulated underground emergency at the Cochenour Arena.

During the exercise five-member teams had to extinguish an electrical fire, find and rescue two miners – one unconscious and severely injured, the second trapped in a room blocked by fallen debris, and cope with the “loss” of their team captain midway through the event, said an Ontario Mine Rescue release after the event.

“Mine rescue team members, the backbone of Ontario Mine Rescue, are volunteer mine workers trained by Mine Rescue Officers to respond to all types of mine emergencies including fires, explosions and falls of ground,” it added.

At the Friday night gala Goldcorp Musselwhite Team 2 was crowned champion by Workplace Safety North and Ontario Mine Rescue. Red Lake Gold Mines Team 1 received top honours for the skills competition on May 12.

The Musselwhite team consisted of Captain Chris Horde, Andrew Legree, Steve Godin, Ryan LePage, Holly Robinson, Robin Jilks, Kylan Pickett, and Briefing Officer Brad Towle.

Dave Hay and the Goldcorp Musselwhite team will represent Red Lake District at the from June 7-9 at the Compass Minerals Goderich Mine in Goderich.

They will compete against teams from across Ontario including Kirkland Lake Gold North Complex Southern District – CGC Hagersville Mine, Vale West Mines, Glencore Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations, North American Palladium Lac des Iles Mine and Tahoe Canada.
