Red Lake District High School RAMS basketball teams will be hitting the courts this week for a do or die series in an effort to be crowned regional champions.

NorWossa round robin play wrapped up last week with both the Sr. and Jr. Girls Basketball teams finishing the season in a three way tie for first place. Coach Bob Grant says the rankings were determined by total points scored against each team for this season, putting the Sr. Girls in first place and the Jr. girls in 3rd place.

“The Senior Girls saw a large group return from last year’s NorWossa silver medal team. The team has been bolstered by a strong defense, started the year with six straight wins,” said Grant on Monday, describing the teams’ season.

“This year saw a nice influx of Grade 9 girls to playing basketball for the RLDHS Rams team. The year started off well with a tight one point win in Rainy River, followed by a tough loss to the Atikokan Voyagers in Atikokan. Through hard work and dedication from the team, they strung together five straight wins.”

As the season ended both teams came up against undefeated St. Thomas Aquinas teams. The Jr. team played “an excellent defensive game” says Grant securing a one-point victory. Despite a struggle in the third quarter the senior girls were able to prevail with a two-point victory.

From Nov. 8-9 the top three teams in junior and senior volleyball and basketball will be in Red Lake looking to secure top honours and a place in the NWOSSA finals later this month.

The Sr. Girls will face the winner of the 2nd (St. Thomas Aquinas) and 3rd (Queen Elizabeth) place semi final game from Nov. 8 on Thursday.

“The Senior Girls will be playing for gold, and the chance to host the NWOSSA championships for a trip to the OFSAA ‘A’ Girls basketball championship at the end of the month,” adds Grant.

The Jr. girls will need to make it past 2nd place St. Thomas Aquinas again in order to play in the final game on Nov. 9 against Atikokan.

On the Jr. boys volleyball court 2nd place Atikokan and 3rd place Ignace will play on Nov. 8 and the winner will meet St. Thomas Aquinas Thursday afternoon. Sr. boys will see 2nd place Queen Elizabeth and 3rd place Atikokan working to move to the final against St. Thomas Aquinas.
