On Tuesday, February 28th, elementary skiers from the Red Lake District gathered to participate in the 2012 Annual Ski Loppet at the Golden Learning Centre in Balmertown.
Big blue skies and warm temperatures made for a quick course and high spirits on race day when approximately 75 students raced 2 km. Skiers used either skate or classic techniques and participated in groups of boys or girls which were organized into similar age groups.
Students from Red Lake-Madsen Public School, the Golden Learning Centre, St. John’s Separate School and Ear Falls Public School launched themselves down a beautifully groomed track. The trail, prepared by Jim Reid, was groomed using equipment borrowed from the Red Lake District Cross Country Ski Club. Winding almost 700 m from the school building and circling around the GLC baseball field, the track included two hills. One steep and one gentle hill to climb and descend made for a challenging and exciting course and led to many passing opportunities.
When finished, skiers enjoyed hot chocolate and cheered on other competitors still racing. Medals were awarded to the top three finishers in each race. Congratulations to all skiers who participated and to the coaches and parent volunteers who donated their time to make the 2012 loppet so successful.
Enjoy the remainder of the skiing season!
